What is Underwriting?
Monday, January 26, 2026The Fancy Term
Underwriting is the process of assessing and classifying the risk of an insurance applicant to determine if the company should accept the risk, and if so, what price to charge.
In Plain English
Imagine you're signing up for a new online multiplayer game, and before you can join the big competitive league, the game's system checks your past performance, internet connection, and even how often you rage-quit. The 'underwriter' is like that system, trying to figure out if you're a 'safe bet' for their insurance team, or if you're going to cause a lot of 'damage' and cost them a fortune!
Why Should You Care?
This 'risk assessment' decides if an insurance company will even cover you (for things like your car, health, or future income) and, more importantly, how much you'll have to pay. The 'riskier' they see you, the more expensive your insurance will likely be!
